En inglés, las prepositions of place son palabras que nos permiten indicar la posición de algo en relación con otra cosa. Son como las coordenadas de un mapa: nos ayudan a describir dónde está un objeto, persona o lugar de manera exacta.
Aprender a usarlas correctamente es clave para describir tu entorno y para sonar natural al hablar.
Las prepositions básicas que ya conoces
Antes de avanzar, recordemos tres muy comunes:
- In → dentro de un espacio cerrado.
Ejemplo: She is in the kitchen. - On → apoyado o en contacto con una superficie.
Ejemplo: The book is on the table. - At → en un punto específico, sin importar si está dentro o fuera.
Ejemplo: He is at the door.
Otras prepositions of place esenciales
Next to – Al lado de
Indica que algo está justo al costado de otra cosa, sin nada en medio.
- The school is next to the park.
- The chair is next to the desk.
Across from / Opposite – Enfrente de
Se usa cuando dos lugares están uno frente al otro, separados por una calle o un espacio.
- The bank is across from the supermarket.
- The bookstore is opposite the café.
In front of – Delante de
Algo o alguien está en la parte frontal de otra cosa.
- The bus stop is in front of the school.
- There is a bench in front of the building.
Behind / In back of – Detrás de
Muestra que algo está en la parte trasera de otra cosa.
- The car is behind the house.
- The playground is in back of the library.
Near / Close to – Cerca de
Habla de algo que está a poca distancia, aunque no necesariamente pegado.
- My apartment is near the mall.
- The school is close to the hospital.
Far from – Lejos de
Indica una gran distancia física.
- The airport is far from the city.
- The house is far from the beach.
Between – Entre (dos cosas)
Se usa solo cuando hay dos elementos que rodean a otro.
- The pharmacy is between the bank and the post office.
- The park is between two streets.
On the corner of – En la esquina de
Describe la posición donde se cruzan dos calles.
- The café is on the corner of Main Street and First Avenue.
- There is a small shop on the corner of the street.
Las prepositions of place no son solo traducciones; son imágenes mentales. Cuando piensas en la escena que quieres describir, la elección de la preposición correcta se vuelve natural.
